With Thailand, after Brazil, having the estimated second largest Japanese population outside of Japan, it is almost guaranteed to find authentic Japanese food in the Thai capital Bangkok. From a guide to Bangkok’s 100 best restaurants, 13 of them originate from the Land of the Rising Sun. Roughly, those can be separated into three categories: Izakaya bars (Grilled snacks and drinks such as Japanese beer, whiskey, sake and many more), Sushi counters and Ramen joints. Most of them are located conveniently along Sukhumvit Road, so it’s just a stone’s throw away from your hotel in Sukhumvit area of Bangkok.

Ginza Sushi Ichi (LG floor, Erawan, Ploen Chit Rd.)

A branch of the Tokyo mother ship, both awarded with Michelin Stars, treats with uncompromisingly authentic omakase-style sushi. The fresh fish and other food is flown in daily from Toyosu Market and therefore super fresh. Watch the chefs in traditional outfits wielding elegant knives while preparing the food at the counter in front of you.

Mensho Tokyo (G floor, RSU Tower, Sukhumvit Soi 31)

This ramen chain serves definitely more than you would expect from a franchise and elevates the simple soup to humble soul food beyond the usual tonkotsu and shio standards. Their chicken-based broth is paired with seasonal and local ingredients and taking ramen to the next level. Try their signature tori paitan with a milky soup, flame grilled chashu pork and juicy pink slices of duck breast.

Teppen (12/2 Sukhumvit Soi 61)

This popular Izakaya bar comes to live after work hours when salary man (and woman) from the surrounding offices congregate here to have an easy dinner and a few drinks. The wood-dominated slender house in Japanese style makes you feel like in Tokyo and so are their staff. Be prepared for a rough but welcoming atmosphere of whiskey highballs, pub food like grilled skewers and lots of other authentic meals and drinks in Izakaya style.
